FIFTY SHADES OF GREY PLOT
When Anastasia Steele, a literature student, goes to interview the wealthy Christian Grey, as a favour to her roommate Kate Kavanagh, she encounters a handsome, brilliant and intimidating man. The innocent and naive Ana, startled to realise she wants him, despite his enigmatic reserve and advice, finds herself desperate to get close to him. Not able to resist Ana's beauty and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her too, but in his own terms. Ana hesitates as she discovers the singular tastes of Grey – despite the embellishments of success – his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family – Grey is consumed by the need to control everything. As they get close, Steele starts to discover Grey's secrets and explores her own desires.
In March 2012 Universal Pictures and Focus Features secured the rights to the Fifty Shades trilogy. Author EL James has been heavily involved during the movie's creative process. Entertainment Weekly estimated the film's budget as "$40 million-or-so".
Kelly Marcel a British writer and actress, has written the Fifty Shades of Grey screenplay. Patrick Marber an English comedian, playwright and screenwriter was brought by director Sam Taylor Johnson to polish the screenplay. Mark Bomback an American screenwriter was hired by Universal for script doctoring.
Filming was scheduled to start on November 5, 2013 in Vancouver, British Columbia. But Principal photography was delayed and eventually started on December 1, 2013. Scenes were filmed in the Gastown district of Vancouver. Bentall 5 was used as the Grey Enterprises building. The University of British Columbia serves as Washington State University, from which Ana graduates. The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver was used as the Heathman Hotel. The film was also shot at the North Shore Studios. The production officially ended on February 21, 2014. Reshoots involving scenes between Dornan and Johnson took place in Vancouver during the week of October 13th.
FIFTY SHADES DARKER PLOT
Intimidated by the dark secrets of attractive, tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele decides to break up with him and embark on her career after being hired in a publishing house in Seattle. But desire for Christian still dominates her thoughts, and when he finally proposes to resume their adventure with new parameters for the two, Ana can not resist. They resume their torrid and sensual relationship, but while Christian fights the demons of his past he realizes that he is truly in love with Anastasia. Ana must confront the anger and envy of women that came before her without giving her time even to assimilate everything that happens and has to make the most important decision of her life.
A film adaptation of the book was produced by Focus Features, Michael De Luca Productions, and Trigger Street Productions, with Universal Pictures and Focus Features securing the rights to the trilogy in March 2012. On November 12, 2015, TheWrap confirmed that James Foley would direct both sequels which would be shot back to-back in 2016, with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan both returning for the sequels.
Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti return to produce the sequels along with E.L. James.
On April 22, 2015, it was announced that E.L. James' husband, Niall Leonard, would write the script for the sequel. Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley told The Hollywood Reporter that the second instalment will be "more of a thriller".
It was confirmed that filming would begin in February 2016 in Vancouver, the studio North Shore Studios was booked for the film. In November 2015, Universal Studios announced that both films sequels will be shot back-to-back with principal photography scheduled to commence in early 2016. Filming began in Vancouver in February 9, 2016 to July 12, 2016, under the working title, "Further Adventures of Max and Banks 2 & 3."
